Problem:

The current "Multiple Select" field in Airtable Enterprise is limited to a fixed set of options. This can be restrictive when you need to dynamically generate options based on other fields or data in your base, or when you want to automate the selection process based on certain criteria.

Solution:

A formula-based multiple select field would allow you to address these limitations by providing two powerful options:

1. Formula-based Option Generation:

  • Specify a formula that generates the options for the field.
  • Generate options based on any data in your base, including other fields, related tables, and external data sources.
  • Create dynamic and flexible forms and interfaces.

2. Formula-based Option Preselection:

  • Define formulas for individual options within the field.
  • Formulas evaluate and preselect options based on specific criteria.
  • Users can override the preselection and manually select or deselect options.
  • Combine the flexibility of formulas with the control of manual user input.

I really like this idea.  Even if it is just conditionally based.  

 

At basic level this really helps when bases are build with statuses and sub statuses that confer to specific situations.

Another example would be for my company's walk-in tablet that clients who come into the lobby fill out.  I would like a multi-select tool that would conditionally tailor the reasons a client would visit the lobby based on how they fill out other fields.  For instance, if someone is coming for an existing appointment or not, should have access to some overlapping and some different reasons for coming to visit--i.e., requesting to make an appointment.
